The Nomad Diaries E2: You're going to burn the whole forest down
Welcome back to The Nomad Diaries episode 2! In this week’s edition, we highlight one of the most important considerations for all of us to make this season — fire safety. What would you do if you saw a group deliberately disobeying fire bans?
We’ll also catch up with our friend Reed who’se biking the longest road in America to see where he is at and how he is doing.
And lastly, we’ll delve into a photographer whose mission is to capture the essence of her subjects, transforming vulnerability into empowerment through her compassionate and authentic approach.
Wild Fire Season: What Would You Do?
Imagine this — you’re enjoying a gorgeous lakeside stay in the backcountry when you see a group having a bonfire during a fire ban. This is exactly what Chrome from Vancity Vanlife faced as he enjoyed a peaceful retreat at Jigsaw Lake, BC. Beyond disrespecting the very nature that makes vanlife so enjoyable, this story raises a moral question: is it our duty to hold others accountable within this lifestyle?
The nomadic community and The Nomad Diaries have a deep respect for nature, and have a firm commitment to following fire bans and other safety regulations.
Wildfires destroy thousands of acres of land each year, with over 15 million hectares burned in Canada in 2023 alone—an area larger than the entire state of Florida. The economic impact is equally devastating, with suppression costs exceeding $2.3 billion in the United States in 2020 and total economic damage often reaching tens of billions annually. These staggering statistics underscore the urgency of adhering to fire bans and practicing responsible stewardship. By doing so, we not only protect our environment but also uphold the values that make the vanlife community special.
Where’s Reed?
Remember our friend Reed who had the terrifying bear encounter while biking the longest road in the world?
I caught up with him to see what he is up to, “ I’m in Kitwanga BC. Started biking this morning and noticed I
had a broken spoke and that my wheel was all warped. So I hitchhiked to this gas station and now trying to find a ride to Smithers BC where there’s a bike shop. I’m upset to have to take ride because it feels like cheating but it was inevitable at some point”
The Nomad Diaries is committed to supporting Reed the entire journey, and if you’re in a place to throw him a couple bucks for a shower, a spoke repair, or even just poutine to keep him peddling through Canada & beyond — you can click here, or scan the QR code below.
